i wrote this song for richard farina. i based it on his song birmingham Sunday, which used the melody from there once was a lass, which his friends the clancy brothers recorded. That song was an adaption of old gael’s lament, an old irish ballad. pete seeger used the melody for his song king henry.

paper i wrote for my folklore class with alison lurie, the year she won the Pulitzer prize for literature. I sang songs in her class in the tradition of peter yarrow, who did in his folklore class 30 years before me.
