My brother-in-law Paul told me about this poem by E.B. White. I tracked down a copy of the original 1946 New Yorker where it was first published. Supposedly, White was in a bad place after World War II, and this was his response. I loved it and set it to music. I performed this with Matt Jaffe on cello at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, July 19, 2005.
